Oxford Street is a busy and long shopping street in the City of Westminster. The street follows the route of a Roman road, the Via Trinobantina, which linked Colchester with Hampshire.

It was notorious for being the last road that condemned prisoners walked on their way from Newgate Prison to the gallows at Tyburn.

In the late 18th century, the Earl of Oxford who gave his name to the road bought much of the land around it to develop, and by the 19th century it was known for its shops.

As well as shopping, it is know for its Christmas lights which every year are switched on by a different famous person.

The road is also famous as being the home of the legendary 100 Club, which is a music venue that has played live music since 1942.

The Sex Pistols and The Clash famously played here as well as the Rolling Stones.

In 1841 there were 34 pubs on Oxford Street, now there is just The Tottenham, which dates back to 1970. It is famous for its real ales and painting of three curvy women by the music hall decorative artist Felix De Jong.
